There are many different approaches to solving math Questions. It should also not surprise you that for most math questions you will encounter in Middle School, or in High School and at College or University, there will be more than one approach to finding a solution. Intrinsically mathematics is about logic. A solution to a math question is a set of logical statements that lead to a logical solution. Mathematics is also consistent. This is the primary reason there are more than one approach to answer most of the math questions you will encounter.There are so many different types of mathematics questions that there are many different approaches and techniques to be considered. There are a denumerably finite number of math questions and techniques, but that number is rather large. As you can imagine, no single book or workbook could offer to prepare you for all types of math questions you might encounter. But a good book or workbook can help you think like a mathematician. There is a certain psychological nature at being good at solving mathematics questions: Being curious is one aspect. Enjoying puzzles is another. Being proficient at pattern recognition is third. Being stubborn and persistent is a fourth aspect. You sometimes need to bring the best of your mind to work to solve challenging math questions. Don’t forget to pat yourself on the back when you do solve a challenging math question!The solving of math questions is a science in itself. The solving of math questions has been studied and written about by a number of competent authors. One worth noting is the late and great Hungarian-American Mathematician George Polya (1887 – 1985) of Stanford University.I don’t believe George Polya would mind if I replaced the ‘P’-word with the much more appropriate ‘Q’-word, Question in his wonderful quote, which is at the beginning of his book How to Solve It:“A great discovery solves a great Question but there is a grain of discovery in the solution of any Question. Your question may be modest: but if it challenges your curiosity and brings into play your inventive faculties, and if you solve it by your own means, you may experience the tension and enjoy the triumph of discovery.”As part of or work together we shall read sections of his book How to Solve It. This book is available online as a pdf download at the website archive.orgPolya’s book is a wonderful read and a good resource. We shall use excerpts from How to Solve It as reading activities.As you work through the questions in this book I would recommend you keep a notebook at hand and write all your work and thoughts down. Be meticulous in your notes. The more you write down today the less you need to try to remember in years to come. You might find your workbook and notebook a useful resource in years to come!Typically there is more than one approach to solving math questions. Good mathematicians consider several approaches. As students of mathematics several approaches work to your advantage. Let us look at a series of examples and how different the techniques to solve these examples may be.There will be other How to Solve it books in the New Mathematics for the Millions series. Each book in this How to Solve It series will get more and more challenging.I have a healthy respect for George Polya, and you should too! I do hope as part of your read of this book you have read through his lovely book as well.In the subsequent books of my How to Solve It series I will provide more of my own prose and provide more challenging questions.
