This book originates from graduate courses given in Cambridge and London. It provides a brisk, thorough treatment of the foundations of algebraic number theory, and builds on that to introduce more advanced ideas. Throughout, the authors emphasise the systematic development of techniques for the explicit calculation of the basic invariants, such as rings of integers, class groups, and units. Moreover they combine, at each stage of development, theory with explicit computations and applications, and provide motivation in terms of classical number-theoretic problems. A number of special topics are included that can be treated at this level but can usually only be found in research monographs or original papers, for instance: module theory of Dedekind domains; tame and wild ramifications; Gauss series and Gauss periods; binary quadratic forms; and Brauer relations. This is the only textbook at this level which combines clean, modern algebraic techniques together with a substantial arithmetic content. It will be indispensable for all practising and would-be algebraic number theorists.

Robert Daniel Carmichael (March 1, 1879 – May 2, 1967) was a leading American mathematician. The purpose of this little book is to give the reader a convenient introduction to the theory of numbers, one of the most extensive and most elegant disciplines in the whole body of mathematics.

Algebraic Number Theory - James Milne ~ Algebraic number theory studies the arithmetic of algebraic number fields — the ring of integers in the number field, the ideals and units in the ring of integers, the extent to which unique factorization holds, and so on. An abelian extension of a field is a Galois extension of the field with abelian Galois group. Class field theory describes the abelian extensions of a number field .

Good algebraic number theory books - MathOverflow ~ $\begingroup$ Pierre Samuel's "Algebraic Theory of Numbers" gives a very elegant introduction to algebraic number theory. It doesn't cover as much material as many of the books mentioned here, but has the advantages of being only 100 pages or so and being published by dover (so that it costs only a few dollars). Reading this would certainly prepare you well for some of the more advanced books .

Algebraic number theory - Wikipedia ~ Algebraic number theory is a branch of number theory that uses the techniques of abstract algebra to study the integers, rational numbers, and their generalizations. Number-theoretic questions are expressed in terms of properties of algebraic objects such as algebraic number fields and their rings of integers, finite fields, and function fields. These properties, such as whether a ring admits .
